Vinita Gupta - Lupin Ltd.

Ms. Vinita Gupta was born and brought up in Mumbai, & completed her graduate degree in Pharmacy from Mumbai University, which acted as stepping stone towards her entrepreneurial journey.

Ever since Vinita started understanding anything about business, she has had a singular focus- to take homegrown pharma major, Lupin (the Company founded by her father in 1968), outside India and to make a material difference through affordable and innovative medicines. “If we did this in the US, we would be ten times the size, given the market potential,” she would often tell her father Desh Bandhu Gupta.

With this vision in her eyes, when Vinita completed her MBA from J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management, USA, she immediately joined Lupin’s US business in 1992. This was her chance at making most of the opportunity to mark in the land of dreams. She soon started controlling the unit’s functioning and oversaw building its infrastructure.

Under her leadership the Suprax (a pediatric anti-infective drug) was launched in US. Suprax turned out to be a massive victory, the company broke even in the second year in the US and hit profitability in their third year. Suprax’s tremendous success laid a foundation of the launch-pad for Gupta’s entrepreneurial flight. She then grabbed every opportunity that came her way in the US and converted it to success with as much entrepreneurial spirit and zing as can be. In 2010 Lupin achieved to be the only Indian company in the US Top 10 prescription drug firms.

Business Toady headlined one of its articles as “Vinita Gupta has almost singlehandedly shown the world how India can succeed in the market for branded drugs in the United States”.

Her enthusiasm and energy took the company to the new heights. Vinita earned numerous awards & was Ranked #7 Among Most Powerful Women in Business in India by Fortune India 2020.
